For many people, the best part about winter break is being able to sleep in, watch movies and drink astounding amounts of hot chocolate. (Speaking of hot chocolate, keep your eyes open for some new and interesting hot chocolate recipes that will be uploaded to the website this winter break.) But for those brave souls who choose to face the cold winter air, the best part of break is going sledding. And to help those adventurous people make the most out of their winter break, here is a list of some of the top places to go sledding in Iowa City.
For anyone who wants to go to a big open area where they are bound to see some familiar faces in the crowds of kids bundled up in snow gear, a larger park is a good option. Some of the great parks in Iowa city are:
Happy Hollow Park
Hickory Hill Park
Kent Park
Benton Hill Park
Willow Creek Park
City Park
* If you are specifically looking for a place that doesn’t take a long time to get to, Willow Creek Park, City Park and Benton Park are all good options because they are the closest to West High School.
But if you want something no farther than West itself, then close out of mapquest because West High has some great hills in the back of the campus between the softball diamonds and the [upper] soccer field. The step-like hills leading up to the soccer field are great for everyone. Just choose which level you want to start on and work your way up to the top. (just make sure you watch out for the batting cages at the bottom of the hills because a busted up sled is an easy way to ruin a fun afternoon.)
Other options besides schools and city parks are golf courses. Golf courses are great for sledding and cross-country skiing because they have the perfect amount of open space and varying steepness of hills based on what hole you are on. (note: hole number 14 is usually a fairly steep hole if anyone is interested in trying to gain as much speed as possible, the back nine holes are also usually more hilly then the other holes.) Also, when sledding on a golf course, the driving range is a good place to spend your afternoon. The driving ranges tend to be good places to sled because of how open they are and another added bonus of the driving range is that there are no trees to dodge!
Two golf courses that you should take a look at are:
Brown Deer Golf Course
Finkbine Golf Course.
(*if there is anyone in the club house, I would suggest asking permission before you start your adventure, but if no one is there, well, have fun!)
If you are still in need of new places to sled, you can go to the website www.sledriding.com/Iowa.html for more ideas and directions.
Have a great winter break, West High!
