The best sledding spots in Indiana may very well not compete with the best spots for sledding available in states with extensive mountain ranges. That's one
of the good things about sledding. People can make do pretty much with what they have. Even in areas when what passes for a hill may raise some eyebrows, locals get to know what their area can provide and make the best of what they have. While they can't recreate the land form of Indiana an turn it into the Rockies the folks of Indiana do know how to mold what they have into some of the best sledding spots in Indiana.
Oak Ridge Prairie, Griffith, Indiana Okay when you hear the word prairie you definitely don't think of hills for sledding . But in Indiana you can find one of the best spots for sledding at a site with precisely that name.
Sledding is offered at Oak Ridge Prairie ,Griffith Indiana on days when sufficient snow cover exists to allow for safe sledding. From December 1- March whenever that snow base is present you will find plenty of company sledding at Oak Ridge Prairie. It is always wise and suggested to call 219 884-7627 if you have any doubts about the snow condition. The park opens at 9 a.m. and remains open until 5 p.m.
If you choose to go to Oak Ridge Prairie you are required to bring your own tube or a plastic sled with you. There are no rentals available at this site nor are wooden or metal sleds permitted on the slopes here. As this is a matter of public safety , compliance is expected with this park rule. When there is a gate keeper on duty , groups will be expected to pay a minimum gate fee for entry.
There are several other county parks open for sledding in Lake County like Lemon Lake and Cedar Lake parks and all follow the same rules of operation.
Centennial Park, Munster, Indiana. Way back at the beginning of the 20th century in 1905, what is now Centennial Park in Munster, Indiana was opened as a clay mine. Over the course of the last century the land was gradually turned into a local landfill. But the crowing glory came when this same piece of town land was successfully converted into a park for the safe and healthy use of Munster residents.
In fact in 2007 Munster received a major award for its innovative use of community land for the construction of Centennial Park. The park is opened throughout the year for a variety of community events. When winter arrives folks in Munster can now rely on the converted land at Centennial Park as a place where there children can engage in healthy outdoor activities. As the conversion process took place planners built in the concept of a sledding hill for area kids. Now when the snow comes down in Munster, Indiana, as it so often does, its not long before sled toting kids are on their way to Centennial Park for some of the best, and certainly the most creative, sledding spots in Indiana.
Oxbow County Park, Goshen, Indiana Featuring literally hundreds of acres of recreational land Oxbow County Park doesn't close down when the winds and white precipitation of winter arrive. Sure its great to hike or picnic here in the summer and take a chance that you may see some of the wildlife like deer, raccoons and lots of species of birds enjoying the warm weather and sunshine, but winter has its own delights for the hardy.
At Oxbow County Park winter time visitors can take advantage of two distinct sledding hills according to their taste. This means that there is seldom a jam up of participants on either hill and sledding is done with greater efficiency and probably fewer collisions. What is great about Oxbow County Park is that it takes into consideration that winter sledding can be a demanding sport and participants sometimes need a place tor est and warm up. Hence the construction of a warming building that is for the use of sledders to help them extend their sledding day by offering them a chance to catch their breath and their body heat before take on the hills again. In January hours at the park run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m but as more sunlight appears February hours at the park are extended to 8 a.m.- 7 p.m. A minimal fee is charged for use of the park but all proceeds go for park upkeep.
Bonneyville Mill County Park, Bristol, Indiana In the summer, fishermen enjoy coming to Bonneyville Mill County Park because of the presence of the little Elkhart River Along its shores they compete to pull in the bass and rainbow trout that are stocked here throughout the summer season. But winter brings out a different breed of cat.
Bonneyville Mill County Park is well known in the region for the scenic beauty of its paths and terrain. Because of its beauty and its groomed trails it has become one of top cross country ski spots in the area. What those cross country skiers often discover is that Bonneyville Mill County Park is also a one of the best sledding spots in Indiana.
